Having trained in digital counselling, including using webcam, live chat tools and email I was curious to know whether it was possible to offer EMDR online.
For me this became urgent at the start of the 2020 pandemic as I was actively working in an EMDR way with clients in the clinic where I'm based using eye movements. Luckily there were already therapists working over the phone and using webcam, and the EMDR community rallied round to share information and best practice in offering EMDR online.
Transitioning to working online has been great, with existing clients and now people coming to online EMDR from their first session. It's possible to use phone or webcam as long as we have a stable connection, and I support people in preparing for this kind of work by providing a checklist of things to put in place before our first meeting.
